American actress Charlotte Kate Fox [1],[2],[3] named first foreigner in lead role on new NHK drama
The 150 15-minute episodes of the series will begin airing in September until March of next year. Fox will take the role of Rita Taketsuru, the Scottish wife of Masataka. The 28-year old actress won the role over 500 others who auditioned for the role. Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Fox said ‘I am very honored, and I still can’t believe I’m standing in front of you now.” Japanese actor Tetsuji Tamayama on the other hand, will play the role of Masataka, Fox’s character’s husband in the series. This is the first time the New Mexico native will appear in a Japanese drama, as she mostly did theater and indie films in the U.S.
Massan will begin during the first part of Taketsuru’s journey to Scotland to learn how whiskey is made, his love story with Rita, and their eventual return to Japan at the end of the first Word War. According to series writer Daisuke Habara, who won best screenplay for Hula Girls in 2006, the story will include fictional and humorous plot twists, despite being based on a true story. This will be the public broadcaster’s 91st series in its Renzoku Terebi Shosetsu (“serial TV novel”), which the company started in 1961. The hit from 1983, Oshin, and 2013′s Amachan were also mini-drama series watched by large audiences.
