When Celebs Get Sassy

When Celebs get Sassy: The Best in Celeb Interview Comebacks

Anne Hathaway (Image Credit: Extra/YouTube)
When I’m excited for a new movie to be released in theaters, I’m not just excited to watch the film. A movie’s release date also brings along a string of public appearances and interviews from the actors and actresses involved. I love being able to get a glimpse of the film from the other side, to hear about what it was like on set, get a feel for the dynamic of the cast and to see what they are like in real life, as opposed to how I see them in character. For the most part, interviews are pretty standard and ask mostly the same questions (some inevitably uncomfortable ones), and therefore the celebrities respond in a similar way. So, of course, it’s always a pleasant surprise when the celebrities shake it up, responding in a way that surprises the audience. Here are a few celebrity interview comebacks that either: a) made my jaw drop, b) made me laugh out loud or c) made me want to z-snap and say, “Oooo, kill ‘em.”

Lauren Conrad

In a radio interview with Sway Calloway, Lauren Conrad was asked the cringing question, “What’s your favorite position?” Instead of squirming and maneuvering her way around it, she took a beat, smiled cleverly and answered, “CEO.” I laughed a little and then just wanted to give her a high five, because it was the most brilliant cop out ever. She was (and still is) the epitome of class and an empowered woman.

Anne Hathaway

During the promotional tour for The Dark Knight Rises, it seemed all anyone wanted to talk about was Anne Hathaway’s diet and exercise routine for Catwoman. After she answered pretty defectively, interviewer Jerry Penacoli pressed a little harder for a more concrete answer. Instead of losing her cool, Anne Hathaway turned it around on him, saying, “Are you trying to lose weight? What’s the deal, man? You look great.” This made me feel like Damian in Mean Girls, and she was Glen Coco. Good for you, Anne Hathaway, you go, Anne Hathaway!

Theo James

It’s no secret that Theo James has become an interview favorite. As he’s been bouncing from one interview to the next promoting Divergent, it’s almost guaranteed that he’s going to be asked this question: Which faction would you choose? Instead of answering it as expected, he responded with his very own faction that, as long as he’s in it, sounds like heaven: “I would choose the faction where everyone has to wear leopard skin thongs, and basically live in a small hut called hula, and every morning praise the sun god.” Whatever you want, there, Theo.

Scarlet Johansson

In multiple interviews for The Avengers, Scarlet Johansson was asked about what she wore underneath her skin-tight costume. Finally in an interview with ExtraTV, she’d had enough and spoke her mind on the ridiculousness of being asked if she was wearing underwear. I was so proud of her for not holding back, but still keeping herself together. I agree, Scarlet; it shouldn’t be okay for an interviewer to try and push a conversation about what a woman does or doesn’t wear under her clothes.

Jennifer Lawrence

Ah, yes, the queen of interviews. Jennifer Lawrence had quite the year in 2013, taking home an Oscar for Best Actress, dazzling the world and becoming a Hollywood favorite. Her interviews on the red carpet were undeniably hilarious, but there was one in particular that had me rolling. When asked to talk about the pieces she was wearing, she looked down at her dress and matter-of-factly said, “What do you mean? Like… this is the top, and this is the bottom.” It was in that moment that I knew we’d be best friends.

Ansel Elgort

In a fast-paced Q-and-A with Clevver TV and the Divergent cast, Ansel Elgort avoided a slightly awkward question with ease and charm. The entire cast was asked individually if they preferred “red, white or beer.” What was his response? “I’m under 21. I don’t drink. I’ve never had a drop of alcohol, so I wouldn’t know.” Props for being quick on your feet there, Ansel!
I love it when some of my favorite celebrities have some sass in their interviews. Answering the same questions over and over again or conquering and awkward situation can be tough. Every actor and actress should take some pointers from these stars in their next interview.
